Few places in the Gettysburg campaign are tied to a single event as directly as this inn in Emmitsburg, Maryland, whose sleeve caption identifies it as the place where a newspaper "Special artist" was captured on July 5, 1863. Emmitsburg sits a few miles south of Gettysburg, and in the days around the battle Confederate and Union movements swept through the surrounding countryside, so civilian buildings like this one often found themselves in the path of troops. The image is a stereograph, made from two glass negatives that record slightly different viewpoints, so it was meant to be seen through a stereo viewer for a three-dimensional effect. The photographer's name, James F. Gibson, is written on the sleeve, though it has a line through it and a question mark.
