A horse identified as belonging to a Confederate captain named Perkins, taken at Cornwallis Cave near Yorktown, Virginia, is the subject here, which places the scene on the Peninsula in 1861, when Confederate forces were fortifying the area in the war's first months. The picture survives as a stereograph, two glass negatives made side by side so that a viewer with a stereoscope sees depth. Photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made it using the wet collodion process, which required coating and exposing each plate before the emulsion dried.
