Few views from the Peninsula campaign show a military position and a church together as clearly as this one. The caption names a naval battery at Yorktown, Virginia, with the Nelson church behind it, and notes that the church was then serving as a hospital. Union forces had taken Yorktown in May 1862 after Confederate troops withdrew, and McClellan's army used the town as a supply and staging point through that summer. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, made this image on a glass wet-collodion negative, a method that required the operator to coat, expose, and develop the plate quickly on site.
