The gun emplacements here were known as the "Jeff Davis guns," named for Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, and this 1862 view shows one of the batteries the Confederates built to defend Yorktown on the Virginia Peninsula. Union forces under George McClellan besieged the town that spring during the Peninsula Campaign, and the Confederates withdrew in early May 1862. The image is a glass negative made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to prepare and develop each plate on site. It was taken by David B. Woodbury, who worked as a photographer during the war and died in 1866.
