Named for Winfield Scott, the former Union general-in-chief, this camp near Yorktown, Virginia, housed Topographical Engineers, the officers who mapped roads, rivers and fortifications for the army. In the spring of 1862, George McClellan's army advanced against the Confederate lines at Yorktown, and survey work like this was central to planning that campaign. The stereograph is a glass wet collodion negative by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866. Plates of this kind had to be coated and developed on site, so the image is a direct record of wartime fieldwork.
