The gun shown here is the bow armament of the Confederate gunboat Teazer, which the record says was captured by the Union vessel Maritanza in 1862. Early in the war, the Confederacy improvised a small fleet of gunboats from captured or converted vessels, and the Union navy seized several of them, so a photograph of a captured boat's gun documents a real turn in the naval fighting. James F. Gibson made the picture as a stereograph, a paired image meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. It was made with wet collodion on glass, the dominant photographic process of the Civil War years.
