Few places in Virginia changed hands as often as Manassas, the rail junction where Confederate forces had won the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. This stereograph shows the Confederate earthworks on the eastern side of the town in July 1862, a year after that battle, when the line still guarded the railroad. It was made from two glass plates taken from slightly different positions, so seen through a stereoscope the ridges and trenches appear to stand out in depth. The caption on the negative sleeve credits T. H. O'Sullivan, who went on to become one of the best-known photographers of the Civil War.
