The picture shows Confederate earthworks at Yorktown, Virginia, with a large siege gun mounted behind the defenses. In the spring of 1862, Yorktown sat at the center of Union Gen. George B. McClellan's advance up the Virginia Peninsula toward Richmond. The siege lasted from early April until the Confederates pulled out in early May, and the fortifications and heavy guns along the York River were among the most closely studied features of the campaign. The image is a glass stereograph made with the wet collodion process, so it was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gives the earthworks and guns a sense of depth. It was made by James F. Gibson, a photographer who worked in the field during the Peninsula Campaign.
