The Howlett House stood on a bluff above Trents Reach, a bend in the James River downstream from Richmond. Confederate engineers fortified the ground as part of the defenses guarding the approach to the Confederate capital, and the position became known as the Howlett Line. Union forces seized it in 1864, and this 1865 view by photographer James F. Gibson shows a gun emplacement left in the works after the fighting. Made as a glass stereograph using the wet collodion process, it was meant to be seen as a pair, giving the earthworks a sense of depth.
