The name "Redoubt Zabriskie" marks this view as a fortified position, not a town scene: a small, enclosed earthwork built to guard the crossing at Point of Rocks, where the Potomac River cuts through the ridges near the Virginia shore. In 1864, Union forces held this stretch of the river and the railroad that ran beside it, and such redoubts were raised to protect supply lines during the fighting in the Shenandoah Valley. The picture is a stereograph, made from two glass negatives taken a short distance apart, so that viewed through a stereoscope the earthworks appear to stand out in depth. Photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made images like this one for the wartime trade in army views.
