Brandy Station, in Culpeper County, Virginia, is best known for the cavalry battle fought there in June 1863, one of the largest mounted engagements of the war. By 1864 the area was under Union control and filled with Army of the Potomac camps, and these officers' quarters belong to that setting. The title carries a question mark because the exact location is uncertain. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required exposing and developing the plate while it was still wet. Earlier catalogers credited the picture to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, but that attribution has since been revised.
