A slave pen in Alexandria, Virginia, photographed in 1861 under the name of Price, Birch & Co., the firm that bought and sold enslaved people there. Alexandria was a major hub of the domestic slave trade, and pens like this one held people awaiting sale to buyers farther south. The glass negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is no longer accepted, and it is now held in the Library of Congress's Civil War collection.
