This stereograph pair, made in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1861, offers a rare interior view of a slave pen at the start of the Civil War. Alexandria had long been a holding point in the domestic slave trade, where enslaved people were confined in pens like this one before being sold farther south. The photographs were taken after Union forces occupied the city in May 1861, when the sites of that trade came under federal control. The glass negatives were once credited to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is no longer considered firm, so the photographer is best treated as unidentified.
