The Marshall House was a hotel in Alexandria, Virginia, and in May 1861 it became the scene of one of the war's first deaths. After Union troops entered the town, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, a friend of Abraham Lincoln, climbed to the roof to take down a Confederate flag and was shot dead by the innkeeper, James Jackson, who was then killed by a Union soldier. This glass negative was made that same year using the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose and develop each plate before it dried. The record formerly credits the image to Alexander Gardner, who later became known for his battlefield views.
