According to the negative sleeve, this stereograph shows a monument on the Stones River battlefield near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where Union and Confederate armies fought from late December 1862 into early January 1863 in one of the costliest engagements of the Western Theater. The record also names Shiloh and an 1861 date, which conflict with that caption, so the caption's location is followed here. The image survives as two glass plates, a left and right pair meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866.
