The fields near Bull Run saw the first major clash of the Civil War in July 1861 and a second in August 1862. This glass negative, dated June 10, 1865, records a monument standing there about two months after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, when the nation was only beginning to mark its battlefields. It was made by the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat, expose, and develop glass plates while they were still wet. The record notes that the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution has since been revised.
