Few landmarks on the Manassas battlefield were as tied to the 1861 fighting as Sudley Church and the Sudley Sulphur Spring near Catharpin Run. Union troops crossed at nearby Sudley Ford during the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861, and the same ground saw heavy fighting again in August 1862. This stereograph, made that year and issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, records the church and spring while the area was still marked by war. Stereo pairs like this were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth that a single print could not.
