The title credits a church in Petersburg, Virginia, to the 50th New York Engineers, a Union regiment that served around Petersburg during the war. That attribution comes from a note on the negative sleeve and has not been verified. The record dates the glass negative to 1860, before the war began, so the date and the title may not agree and should be read with caution. Wet collodion on glass was a common photographic process in the 1850s and 1860s, and the negative belongs to a larger Civil War collection at the Library of Congress. Earlier cataloguing linked it to Alexander Gardner, a well-known photographer of the period.
