The sleeve identifies the sitter as Surgeon H.A. Potter of the 50th New York Engineers, though that attribution is unverified. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat, expose and develop each plate within minutes, so such portraits took careful, time-sensitive work. David B. Woodbury, the photographer credited with the negative, died in 1866. The 50th New York Engineers was raised during the war, so the recorded 1860 date deserves scrutiny. The plate belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection.
