The surgeon named in this record, J.E. Dexter, is identified only by a notation on the negative sleeve, and that identification has not been verified. The image dates to 1860, a year before the war began, and was made on a glass negative using the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated and exposed while still damp. David B. Woodbury, the photographer credited in the record, died in 1866. The negative belongs to a larger collection of Civil War glass negatives at the Library of Congress, so it is valued today as a record of the years just before the conflict.
