A wet collodion glass negative from 1860, this portrait is catalogued under the name Surg. S.J. Jones, U.S.N., a naval surgeon, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from information written on the negative sleeve and has not been verified. The image was made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who died in 1866. Wet collodion plates were coated and exposed while still wet, so the sitter had to hold still for a considerable time, and the process was then the standard way to make detailed photographs. The negative belongs to a larger group of Civil War glass plates, which makes it useful for studying the naval medical service on the eve of the war.
