This glass negative is a portrait of a surgeon identified as M. E. Simmons of the 22nd Massachusetts Infantry, a Union regiment in the Civil War. The record dates it to 1860, which is earlier than the war, and it notes that the title comes from an unverified sleeve, so the date and identification may need checking. The image was made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each glass plate quickly while it was still wet. The negative belongs to a Civil War glass plate collection and was made by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866.
