The name Surg. R.H. Gilbert comes from an unverified sleeve, so the sitter's identity and unit remain uncertain. This glass negative was made by the wet collodion process, which required a plate to be coated, sensitized, and exposed before it dried, and this 1860 example predates the war by about a year. It is grouped with Civil War photographs because the negatives were later gathered together. Its maker, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866, and the number 3720 scratched into the emulsion helps researchers locate it.
