Grant sits at the left end of a bench in this view of a council of war held at Massaponax Church in Virginia, a small rural church that served as a meeting place for Union commanders in the spring of 1864. The stereograph records the Army of the Potomac's campaign after the Wilderness, when Grant and Gen. George G. Meade were planning the next move against Lee. Charles A. Dana, the War Department's representative at army headquarters, is also named in the record. The image was made as a wet collodion glass negative and published by E. & H.T. Anthony, one of the largest photographic firms of the war, whose stereographs brought front-line scenes to parlors across the North.
