Sharpsburg, Maryland, is the town where this Lutheran church stands, and the view places a plain house of worship at the center of a community that became known for one of the bloodiest days of the Civil War. The battle of Antietam was fought in and around Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862, and in its aftermath churches, homes, and barns across town were pressed into service as hospitals for the wounded. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, made this wet collodion glass stereograph that year, so it captures the community in the weeks when its ordinary buildings were bearing the marks of the fighting.
