Stone-arched and spanning Antietam Creek on the Sharpsburg-Boonsboro Turnpike, this bridge became one of the most fiercely contested spots in the battle fought near Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862. Union troops under Ambrose Burnside spent hours trying to force a crossing against Confederate defenders on the far bank, and the span now bears his name. The 1862 glass negative was made in the weeks after the fighting and is long credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is uncertain. Notice the open ground around the crossing, which explains why the attackers were so exposed.
