Burnside's Bridge, a three-arched stone span over Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland, is the subject here, and it was the site of some of the bloodiest fighting of the battle fought there on September 17, 1862. Union troops under Ambrose Burnside took hours to force their way across the narrow crossing against Confederate defenders on the far bank. This wet collodion glass negative from 1862 records the bridge in the aftermath of the battle, when its stonework and approaches became a focus of attention. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, who photographed the battlefield that autumn, though the attribution has since been revised.
