Marcy, chief of staff to Gen. George B. McClellan, stands among officers and civilians at the Army of the Potomac's camp near Antietam, Maryland, in this 1862 stereograph. The battle there on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single day in American history, and the camp scene shows the army's headquarters life in the weeks that followed. The picture was made from a wet collodion glass negative, a process that demanded quick exposure and immediate development in the field. Stereographs were paired images viewed through a lens to create a sense of depth, and they were sold widely to home audiences. The photographer was long thought to be Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain.
