The subject here is a dwelling known as Mrs. Spinner's house, photographed near Centreville, Virginia, in 1862. Centreville lay close to the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861, and armies on both sides passed through or camped in the area for much of the war. This picture is one half of a stereograph pair, made from two glass plates with the wet collodion process, which let viewers see a single scene in depth through a paired-lens viewer. The War Photograph and Exhibition Company published it, and it is part of the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection.
