Few places in Virginia changed hands as often as the ground across the Rappahannock from Fredericksburg, and this view records a residence that stood at the center of that contest. The Lacy house on the heights above the river was a substantial dwelling, and Union forces occupied the area during the Army of the Potomac's encampment at Falmouth in the winter of 1862 and 1863. The picture was made as a stereograph from a wet collodion glass negative, so it was meant to be seen as a pair through a stereoscope, which gave home viewers a sense of depth in scenes of the war.
