Cumberland Landing, on the Pamunkey River in Virginia, served as a major Union supply point during McClellan's Peninsula Campaign of 1862, when the Army of the Potomac advanced toward Richmond. This stereograph shows Secret Service men at the Follers House there, a detail that sets it apart from the many camp and battlefield views of the period. The operatives worked under Allan Pinkerton, whose intelligence network relied on scouts, couriers and interviews with prisoners and refugees. The subject headings note eating and drinking, so the scene likely records a rare moment of routine off duty behind the lines.
