Umbrella Rock is a large sandstone formation on Lookout Mountain, the ridge overlooking Chattanooga, and this view records it as a stereograph, two nearly identical glass negatives meant to be seen together through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The pair was made in 1864, about a year after Union forces took the mountain during the Chattanooga campaign of late 1863. The record once credited the photographer Alexander Gardner, whose name is now treated as uncertain for this image, but the wet collodion process used here was standard for Civil War-era photographers working in the field.
