Few images from 1862 show artillery crossing water with this much clarity. The title places a Federal battery fording a tributary of the Rappahannock River near Cedar Mountain, in Culpeper County, Virginia. The battle there, fought on August 9, 1862, pitted Union forces under Nathaniel Banks against Confederates under Stonewall Jackson, and the fighting left deep marks on the surrounding countryside. This is a wet-collodion glass stereograph, a format that let viewers see the scene in three dimensions. It was issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, a Washington firm that sold such views to a public eager for images of the war.
