Eight separate portraits of unidentified Federal soldiers share this print, each marked with a letter from a through h, read left to right and top to bottom. The Library of Congress made the copies in 1961 from cartes de visite, the small card portraits that were popular in the 1860s and often traded as keepsakes or sent home to family. The record gives 1860 as the date, which sits uneasily with the Civil War subject, so that date is worth checking against the sitters' uniforms and the period of the conflict.
