Here the name "Essayons," a French motto meaning "let us try," ties this group to the U.S. Engineer Battalion, whose soldiers staged amateur theater in their off-duty hours. The siege of Petersburg, Virginia, ran from June 1864 into the spring of 1865, and engineers there built the trenches, roads and fortifications that held the Union lines around the rail city. Wet collodion glass negatives like this one required quick exposures and still subjects, which makes a group portrait of soldiers at leisure an unusual view of camp life.
