Few pictures in this collection show a British aristocrat among Union officers, but this stereograph does. Its title names William F. Scarlett, the 3rd Baron Abinger, a lieutenant colonel in the Scots Fusilier Guards who visited the Union lines as a foreign observer. The view was made in Falmouth, Virginia, across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg, where the Army of the Potomac camped after its defeat there in December 1862. Photographer James F. Gibson made the wet collodion glass negative in 1863, and as a stereograph, the pair of images was meant to be viewed together for a sense of depth.
