Taken at Jordan's farm near Petersburg, Virginia, in 1864, this stereograph records the execution of a man named William Johnson while Union forces held siege lines around the city and Robert E. Lee's Confederate army. The photograph is attributed to James F. Gibson, one of the photographers documenting the Petersburg front that year. Its two paired halves were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene an unsettling sense of depth. The catalog files it under African Americans and hangings, a reminder that the war's punishments were recorded alongside its battles.
