Two glass plates make up this stereograph, one for each eye, so that a viewer using a stereoscope sees the fortifications and camp in three dimensions. The pair dates to 1861, the first year of the war, when Union forces were building earthworks and encampments around Washington after the attack on Fort Sumter. Wet collodion negatives like these had to be coated and exposed shortly before use, which makes early field views of this kind especially valuable to researchers. The Library of Congress once credited the set to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is no longer considered certain.
