Richmond, the Confederate capital for most of the war, fell to Union forces in early April 1865, and this stereograph records the city in that same year. It was made as a glass negative using the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat and expose each plate before it dried. Its two side-by-side images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, a parlor device that merged them into a single three-dimensional scene. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866. The title comes from the Civil War caption books that later catalogued such views for sale and study.
