From Gambles Hill, a rise overlooking the city and the James River, the photographer captured downtown Richmond in April 1865, just as the Confederate capital fell and Union troops occupied the city. David B. Woodbury made the image as a stereograph, two side-by-side exposures meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect that let period viewers feel they were standing above the scene. Woodbury died in 1866, and his Richmond views remain valued as documents of the city in the weeks after the war's end in Virginia.
