Among the Richmond views on this board, this stereograph stands out for its wide look at the "burnt district," with Pratt's Castle visible on Gambles Hill beyond the ruins. The city's commercial core was badly damaged in early April 1865, when fires set as Confederate forces withdrew spread through downtown as Union troops entered the capital. David B. Woodbury made the pair of glass negatives within weeks of that destruction, and the paired images were meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. Woodbury died in 1866, and his plates remain among the most direct records of the damage.
