Ruined walls and gutted storefronts fill this view of Richmond's burnt district, the commercial core destroyed when fire swept the city in early April 1865. Confederate forces set fires to military stores as they withdrew, and the blaze spread through blocks of downtown buildings before Union troops arrived. This picture is a stereograph, made from two glass plates that were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. It was taken by David B. Woodbury, who documented the aftermath of the war in Richmond, and it gives a close look at how much of the city center was lost.
