Ruined brick walls and gutted shells rise above the streets of Richmond in this 1865 view, the aftermath of the fire that swept the business district in early April as Confederate authorities abandoned the capital and Union troops moved in. David B. Woodbury, who worked in Richmond that year, recorded the scene on wet collodion glass plates. The two halves of this stereograph pair were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, so the rubble appears to stand in three dimensions. Such views were widely sold to Northern audiences who wanted to see the former Confederate capital for themselves.
