Ruined walls and gutted blocks of the downtown business district are the subject of this stereograph pair, made in Richmond, Virginia, in 1865. The fire broke out in early April 1865 as Confederate forces evacuated the capital, and it spread through much of the district before it was brought under control. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the pair on glass negatives using the wet collodion process. The two halves were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gives the wreckage a sense of depth.
