Few Richmond views from 1865 document the destruction as directly as this stereograph, which shows ruined buildings in the city's burned district. Fire swept through much of the downtown in early April 1865, as Confederate forces abandoned the Confederate capital and Union troops moved in. The photograph was made on a glass wet collodion negative, a process that required the photographer to prepare and expose each plate on the spot. Its stereo format, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, gave viewers at the time a sense of depth among the collapsed walls and empty lots.
