Few views of Richmond from the days after the Confederate capital fell are as direct as this stereograph of a street in the burned district. Photographer James F. Gibson, who worked for Alexander Gardner's studio, recorded the city in April 1865, after Confederate forces evacuated and set fires that spread through the commercial blocks along the riverfront and downtown. Because the picture is a stereo pair, its two halves were meant to be viewed together for depth, letting viewers of the day walk through the ruined streets from a parlor chair.
