Franklin Street, with the residence of Gen. Robert E. Lee, is pictured in this 1865 stereograph, a pair of glass negatives meant to be seen together through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Richmond had served as the Confederate capital since 1861, and the year the photograph was made was the year the city fell to Union forces in April. Photographers including James F. Gibson recorded the streets and buildings of the occupied city, and views like this one, of a house tied to the Confederacy's most famous general, were widely sold as souvenirs of the war's end. The image is a useful record of a residential street at a turning point in the city's history.
