The front wall of the Exchange Bank on Main Street still stands in this view of Richmond, while the building behind it has been gutted. The city burned on April 2 and 3, 1865, as Confederate forces abandoned the capital and fire spread through the downtown blocks. James F. Gibson made this wet collodion stereograph, with two glass plates meant to be viewed together for a sense of depth. Pairs like this were popular in the years after the war.
