Looking east from the corner of 11th Street, this view runs down Main Street through the commercial heart of Richmond, Virginia, in the years before the First World War. The glass negative, which measures 8 by 10 inches, came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sent photographers across the country between about 1900 and 1915 to document towns, rail lines and scenic spots for postcards and promotional booklets. Street scenes like this one record the look of a working downtown at the time, with its storefronts, signs and the mix of pedestrians and vehicles on the roadway. The negative was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 and later became part of the Library of Congress collection.
