Few hotels in Richmond carried as much history into the Civil War as the Spotswood, which stood on Main Street and took its name from Alexander Spotswood, a colonial governor of Virginia. This 1865 view, made on a wet collodion glass negative, was taken in the months when the Confederate capital fell and Union forces occupied the city. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked in Richmond that year and recorded its streets and buildings in stereoscopic pairs, which were viewed through special lenses to create a sense of depth. Its caption spells the hotel's name with a double "t," a variant that appears in period records.
